Why You Shouldn’t Be Buying Your Dress Shirts The Old Way?

What if I tell you that you could be buying your dress shirts all wrong? What if the dress shirts you have picked up for yourself don’t even suit you?

Dress shirts come in a ton of different colors, patterns, and prints with an exhausting amount of fit profiles to match. In this situation, finding the best fit and style can be overwhelming and even annoying at first. But don’t worry, we are here to the rescue so that you can find the best fit for yourself and to simplify your dress shirt buying experience. So let’s dive into that age-old question…What dress shirts should you be buying for yourself.

Finance and Fabric of Dress Shirts

One of the deciding factors for this is obviously the amount of money you desire to spend on your dress shirts. Shirts can cost anywhere from $30 bucks at a department store to over $200 getting a custom option. Fabrics also range from 100% cotton to cotton blends for wrinkle-free and lightweight, more breathable options like linen. You should expect to spend anywhere from $70 - $120 on a quality dress shirt.

The Colors of Dress Shirts You Would Need in Your Wardrobe

If you are starting from scratch, you should at least have two to three white dress shirts, two of them being button cuffs, and the other one being a french cuff for formal occasions.

If you’re able to get a whole collection of shirts then you should look to purchase (in addition to the two to three white shirts) two French blue shirts, one pink, one purple, a blue stripe, and maybe one mint green shirt. With that full collection you’d be good to go.

The reason to get these shirts is that they are versatile and can go well with neutral colors such as navy blue and medium grey suits. These colors are universal and can be interchangeable with most suit colors and patterns.

Finding the Right Fit

The reason your dress shirts aren’t looking as good on you as they did on the mannequin is not the color; it's probably the wrong fit that’s making it look less flattering on you.

An ideally fitted dress shirt should fit snugly across the chest and shoulders without pulling at the buttons tapering slightly at the waist to avoid excess fabric.

The right fit means that the shoulder points should sit right on the edge of your shoulders. There should be some looseness, too, to allow free movement of the arm. Your sleeves should be long enough to cover your wrist bones, but not longer.

The proper dress shirt length ends a few inches below the beltline, allowing the shirt to stay tucked in when you raise your arms. When untucked, the hem falls just far enough to cover your belt and the back pockets of your pants.

Dress shirts can be worn in different ways for different occasions. From formal events to dinner dates, dress shirts always rule the game.
